Who We Are

Bridging Veterinary Medicine and Modern Technology

Most IT companies walk into a veterinary practice and spend the first hour asking what Avimark is — or what an Idexx Catalyst does. We don't. With 14 years of hands-on experience as a licensed RVT, we understand your practice from the inside — the software you depend on, the lab equipment you can't afford to have down, and exactly what "offline" means when your Catalyst throws an error mid-appointment.

Redwood Vet Tech was built specifically for Marin County veterinary practices that are tired of generic IT support that doesn't understand their world. We speak both languages — veterinary medicine and information technology.

Your clinic runs on medicine, compassion, and expertise — not IT troubleshooting. When technology gets in the way, it costs you time, revenue, and peace of mind. We exist to take that burden completely off your plate, so every member of your team can focus entirely on patient care.

We know your software & equipment

We're familiar with the practice management platforms and lab analyzers your team relies on every single day.

Security Camera Systems

Professional IP camera installation with remote viewing capabilities. Monitor your clinic, pharmacy, and parking areas from anywhere — giving you peace of mind after hours.

📡

Network Redundancy & Failover

When your primary internet connection goes down, your clinic shouldn't. We design and install cellular failover systems that automatically switch to a backup network the moment your main connection drops — keeping your cloud software, payment processing, and lab equipment online without interruption.

Specialty Services

Lab equipment support — our unique advantage

No other IT provider in Marin County can offer this. Our vet tech background means we understand your in-house lab equipment at a clinical level — not just as hardware to plug in.

🔬

Lab Equipment Troubleshooting & Diagnostics

Error codes, connectivity issues, calibration failures, and software integration problems on Idexx, Abaxis, Heska, Zoetis, and other in-house analyzers. We diagnose the issue, coordinate with the manufacturer when needed, and get your lab back online fast.

Included in Growth & above · $150/hr on-demand

🧪

Monthly Lab Equipment Maintenance

Scheduled preventative maintenance visits to clean, calibrate, and inspect your analyzers before problems occur. Each visit includes QC verification, software updates, consumable checks, and a written service report — keeping you audit-ready and minimizing unexpected downtime.

Starting at $200/month per analyzer · bundles available

📋

Staff Technology Training

We train your team on the technology they use every day — practice management software navigation, proper device startup and shutdown procedures, basic troubleshooting steps before calling IT, printer and label machine operation, and how to handle common error messages independently. The goal is a confident team that resolves minor issues themselves and knows exactly when to escalate.

$125/hr · half-day clinic training packages available

📡

Network Redundancy & Cellular Failover

A dropped internet connection during a busy clinic day can halt your entire operation — cloud software goes offline, payments stop processing, and lab results can't sync. We design and install automatic cellular failover systems using dedicated 4G/5G backup routers that detect a WAN outage in seconds and switch your clinic to a backup connection automatically, with zero manual intervention from your staff.

Need new computers, tablets, label printers, or networking equipment? We source the right hardware for your clinic's needs, set everything up, configure it to your existing systems, and handle disposal of old equipment. No markups, no mystery hardware — just the right tools at cost.

About the Founder

About the Founder

Dustin Melchior is a Marin County native, a licensed Registered Veterinary Technician, and a CompTIA A+ certified IT professional. After 14 years working in veterinary medicine — as a vet tech, supervisor, hospital manager, and emergency clinician — he founded Redwood Vet Tech to solve a problem he lived firsthand.

"After 14 years on the clinic floor, I knew there had to be a better way. Veterinary teams deserve IT support that actually understands their world — the software, the equipment, and the urgency of keeping everything running when lives are on the line."

I've worked in everything from general practice to emergency medicine — including a role as an emergency clinician at Pilchuck Veterinary Hospital in Snohomish, WA, one of the most respected emergency clinics in the Pacific Northwest — and spent over three years with a nonprofit veterinary organization. I've lived every role in the clinic. I know what breaks, when it breaks, and why it matters.

Now I'm channeling that experience into something new — technology support that actually understands the veterinary world from the inside out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything Marin County vet clinics ask us

About Redwood Vet Tech

What makes Redwood Vet Tech different from a general IT company?
Most general IT companies have never worked inside a veterinary clinic before, which means the first few hours of any engagement go toward them learning what Cornerstone, Avimark, or an Idexx Catalyst even is — time you end up paying for. Redwood Vet Tech is run by a licensed Registered Veterinary Technician with 14 years of hands-on clinic experience, so we already understand your workflow, your practice management software, and your lab equipment on day one. We're not generalists who happen to take vet clients — veterinary IT support is the entire business.
What areas do you serve?
We're based in and currently focused on Marin County, California, including Novato, San Rafael, Mill Valley, Sausalito, Tiburon, and the surrounding areas. We offer both remote support (available anywhere) and on-site visits for local clinics. We plan to expand into Sonoma and Napa counties as we grow.
Do you only work with veterinary clinics?
Yes — veterinary practices are our sole focus, which is intentional. By specializing exclusively in veterinary IT and lab equipment support, we can go deeper on the specific software, hardware, and workflows clinics rely on instead of spreading ourselves across unrelated industries.

Software & Practice Management Support

Do you provide IT support for Cornerstone practice management software?
Yes. We support Cornerstone installations, updates, server connectivity troubleshooting, and integration issues. Cornerstone is typically server-based, so we're experienced in diagnosing local server problems, database sync issues, and workstation connectivity errors specific to Cornerstone environments.
Do you support Avimark for veterinary clinics?
Yes, Avimark is one of the core practice management platforms we support, including installation, troubleshooting connectivity between workstations and the Avimark server, and resolving sync or performance issues that affect daily clinic operations.
Can you help with IDEXX Neo, IDEXX Cornerstone, or IDEXX lab equipment issues?
Yes. We support both IDEXX Neo (cloud-based practice management) and IDEXX Cornerstone, as well as IDEXX in-house lab analyzers like the Catalyst and VetLab Station. Because we've worked hands-on with this equipment as vet technicians ourselves, we can often diagnose whether an issue is software, network, or hardware-related faster than a generalist IT provider.
Do you work with ezyVet, Covetrus, or ImproMed?
Yes — we support ezyVet (cloud-based), Covetrus practice management tools, and ImproMed, in addition to Cornerstone and Avimark. If your clinic is considering migrating from a legacy server-based system to a cloud-native platform, we can also help evaluate and manage that transition.

Lab Equipment Support

Do you support in-house lab analyzers like Idexx, Abaxis, and Heska?
Yes — lab equipment support is one of our specialties and something most general IT providers in Marin County simply can't offer. We troubleshoot error codes, connectivity issues, calibration failures, and software integration problems on Idexx, Abaxis, Heska, Zoetis, and other in-house analyzers, and we coordinate directly with manufacturers when a hardware issue needs escalation.
Can you help if our lab equipment won't connect to our practice software?
Yes, this is one of the most common issues we resolve. Lab analyzers need to properly sync results into your practice management software, and when that connection breaks, it usually shows up as missing results or manual re-entry. We diagnose whether the issue is the analyzer, the network, or the software integration itself.

Pricing & Contracts

Do I need to sign a long-term contract?
No. Our monthly plans (Starter, Growth, Premium, and Concierge) are month-to-month with no long-term lock-in, and we also offer a no-contract on-demand hourly option for clinics that aren't ready to commit to a recurring plan. You can choose the arrangement that fits your clinic's needs and change it as those needs evolve.
How much does veterinary IT support cost?
Our monthly plans start at $800/month for the Starter tier and scale up based on support hours, on-site visit frequency, and response time needs, up to $3,000/month for full Concierge-level management. We also offer on-demand hourly support starting at $125/hr remote and $150/hr on-site with no monthly commitment, for clinics that prefer to pay only when they need help.
What's included in the free network health assessment?
The complimentary assessment (a $150 value) includes a network security review, WiFi coverage analysis across your clinic, a workstation health check, and a practice software audit to confirm everything is syncing and backing up properly. There's no obligation — it's designed to give you a clear picture of where your clinic stands before you decide on anything.
Do you charge extra for hardware?
No markups. When we source new computers, printers, or networking equipment for your clinic, hardware is billed at cost, with a flat $100 setup fee per device to cover configuration and integration with your existing systems.

Response Time & Support

How fast do you respond to IT issues?
Response times depend on your plan, ranging from a 4-hour response on the Starter tier down to same-day emergency response on Premium and Concierge plans. Most day-to-day issues are resolved remotely within minutes using secure screen-sharing tools, without needing to wait for an on-site visit.
What happens if our server or network goes down completely?
A full outage — server down, network failure, or a complete practice software outage — is treated as a same-day emergency, and we'll be on-site within hours to get your clinic back online. We also offer network redundancy and cellular failover systems that automatically switch to a backup connection the moment your primary internet drops, so a single outage doesn't have to stop your clinic entirely.
Do you offer remote support, or do you always come on-site?
Most issues are resolved remotely first, using secure screen-sharing tools, which is usually faster than waiting for an on-site visit. Every monthly plan also includes scheduled on-site visits, and we come to you for anything that genuinely needs hands-on attention — like lab equipment, network hardware, or new workstation setup.

Security & Data

How do you protect our clinic's patient records and data?
We set up automated backups, manage antivirus and endpoint protection, and configure secure network settings — including separating staff WiFi from any guest network — to reduce the risk of data loss or unauthorized access. As part of the free network assessment, we also check whether existing backups are actually running and restorable, not just assumed to be working.
Can you help with WiFi dead zones in our clinic?
Yes. Poor WiFi coverage in exam rooms, treatment areas, or surgery suites is a common issue we find during our assessments. We map signal strength room by room and recommend or install the right fix, whether that's a hardware upgrade, better router placement, or additional access points.

Getting Started

How do we get started with Redwood Vet Tech?
The easiest first step is scheduling your free 30-minute consultation and network health assessment. We'll come take a look at your current setup, identify your biggest pain points, and recommend the plan that actually fits your clinic — with no pressure and no sales pitch.
We already have an IT provider — can you still help?
Absolutely. Many clinics keep their existing general IT provider for broader infrastructure needs and bring us in specifically for veterinary practice software and lab equipment support, since that's our specialty. We're happy to work alongside your current provider or serve as a backup contact for anything vet-specific.
